We Fitted a Full Trolley of Boxes Into a 1m³ Locker – Here’s How

Ever looked around your home and thought, “I only need to store a few boxes… surely I don’t need a big storage unit?”
If that’s you, you’re exactly who we had in mind when we added our 1m³ mini lockers at Lockd Future Self Storage in Hull.

They’re small, secure and indoors – and right now they start from just £5 per week, which makes them one of the most affordable storage options in the city.

To show what they’re really like, we did a little experiment. We grabbed a trolley, piled it high with boxes and headed down to the mini locker corridor to see how much would actually fit.

Step One: A Trolley Full of “Real Life” Boxes

We didn’t use special demo boxes or fake photos. These are the same kinds of boxes our customers use every day when they’re moving house, decluttering or heading home for the holidays.

This is the kind of load a lot of people have:

  • a few medium boxes of clothes and bits
  • a computer or games console and cables
  • sports kit or workwear
  • some important documents and keepsakes

At first glance, most people see a 1m³ locker and worry it might be too small. So we opened the door on locker 037 and started loading.

Step Two: What a 1m³ Locker Looks Like Empty

Here’s the locker before we put anything inside. From straight on it looks neat and compact, but once the door is open you can see the depth and height properly.

An empty 1m³ locker – deeper and taller than it first appears.

Because the lockers are built deep rather than wide, you can slide boxes right to the back and then stack more in front, without everything feeling crammed in.

Step Three: Loading the Locker

We stacked the boxes sensibly – heavier ones at the bottom, lighter ones on top – and pushed them snugly to the back. No forcing, no squashing, just normal, careful loading.

The result: a full trolley of boxes tucked neatly into one 1m³ locker – with space left to use.

The result surprised even us. The locker took a full trolley of boxes and still had a bit of room to spare for smaller bits and pieces.

In everyday terms, a 1m³ locker is ideal for things like:

  • 3–8 medium moving boxes
  • a PC tower, monitor and a couple of tech boxes
  • cricket kit, football gear or gym equipment
  • a tent, sleeping bags and camping accessories
  • archive boxes with documents and paperwork
  • seasonal items such as Christmas decorations
  • workwear, PPE and small business stock
  • suitcases, backpacks and smaller electronics

If that sounds like the kind of load you’ve got, a mini locker is probably all you need.

Who Our Mini Lockers Work Best For

We see a real mix of people choosing the 1m³ lockers. A few examples:

  • Students who want somewhere safe for their stuff between terms, without paying for a big unit.
  • People in flats or house shares who are short on cupboard space but don’t want their home full of boxes.
  • NHS staff and temporary workers moving between digs and needing a secure base for personal belongings.
  • Small business owners and trades storing PPE, uniform, catalogues or a few boxes of stock.
  • Anyone decluttering who just wants a little breathing space at home.

If you’ve ever thought, “I only need to store a few bits, I don’t want to overpay”, these lockers are designed with you in mind.

Not Sure What Size You Need?

If you’re weighing things up and thinking, “Will a 1m³ locker be big enough?”, the easiest way to decide is to come and see one.
Bring a quick list of what you’re planning to store (or a few photos on your phone) and we’ll walk you through the options.
